Your Tax Return Tells You What Happened. Tax-Aware Planning Asks What Might Happen Next.
Preparing an accurate tax return is important. But by the time your return is filed, the decisions that created your tax bill have already happened.
Tax-aware wealth planning looks ahead:
- Should income be recognized this year or deferred to next year?
- Could a Roth conversion make sense during a lower-income period?
- Which accounts should provide your retirement income to keep taxes low?
- Could an investment change trigger an unnecessary capital gain?
- How will taxes change for a surviving spouse down the road?
Our role is to identify tax opportunities and consequences before major decisions are made, coordinating directly with your CPA.
Core Disciplines of Tax-Aware Investing
(Built on 30 years of fiduciary guidance across North Georgia.)

Putting the right investments in the right accounts
Different types of investments are taxed differently. We strategically place your holdings across taxable brokerage, Traditional IRA/401(k), and Roth accounts to minimize tax drag across your entire portfolio.
- Tax-deferred accounts (Traditional IRA / 401k): Ideal for income-generating bonds, REITs, and higher-yielding assets to shelter regular distributions from annual income tax.
- Taxable brokerage accounts: Ideal for low-turnover, globally diversified index funds, ETFs, and municipal bonds that benefit from lower long-term capital gains rates.
- Tax-free accounts (Roth IRA): Ideal for high-growth investments so their lifetime growth can be withdrawn tax-free in retirement.

Year-round tax-loss harvesting
Rather than waiting until late December, we monitor your taxable accounts throughout the year. When market dips create an unrealized loss in a specific tax lot, we capture that loss to offset realized gains and up to $3,000 of ordinary income—reinvesting immediately to keep your portfolio fully invested.

Managing cost basis and legacy holdings
When you come to us with appreciated company stock or legacy investments, we don't believe in selling everything on day one. We evaluate specific tax lots (using highest-in, first-out accounting) and build a gradual, tax-managed transition plan that respects what you've built.
Connecting Investments, Retirement, and Family Legacy
Taxes shouldn't dictate every financial choice, but they should never be an afterthought. We look across the major areas of your balance sheet:
Retirement Income
Creating a withdrawal roadmap across taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth accounts.
Roth Conversions
Evaluating whether recognizing income today creates greater tax flexibility in retirement.
Charitable Giving
Using appreciated stock or donor-advised funds to support causes you care about while reducing capital gains.
Business Transitions
Helping business owners structure post-sale wealth with tax efficiency in mind.
Estate Coordination
Planning lifetime family gifts and trust strategies that protect wealth for the next generation.
Your Wealth Advisor and CPA Should Work from the Same Financial Picture
Fountain Wealth Partners does not prepare tax returns or give formal accounting advice. We view that distinction as an opportunity for close teamwork.
With your permission, we collaborate with your CPA throughout the year to:
- Share realized capital gain and loss schedules before year-end.
- Provide clean 1099 and cost-basis reporting.
- Coordinate around Roth conversions and retirement distribution timing.
- Align major portfolio changes with your overall tax bracket.
You stay at the center of every conversation, supported by advisors who communicate with one another.

The Structured Fiduciary Methodology: 3-Step Tax-Optimization Process
Bringing the pieces together: We systematically evaluate your portfolio's after-tax efficiency, rebalance across tax silos, and synchronize reporting with your tax professional.

Tax drag diagnostic & account siting audit: We analyze the underlying tax efficiency of every holding across all household accounts, identifying misplaced income assets, high-turnover mutual funds, and embedded unrealized gains.
Systematic asset location structuring: We realign your global asset allocation across taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth accounts—minimizing annual income generation in taxable accounts while maximizing long-term tax deferral.
Continuous monitoring & synchronized CPA reporting: Acting as your fiduciary quarterback, we continuously execute lot-by-lot tax-loss harvesting throughout the calendar year and deliver comprehensive realized gain/loss schedules directly to your CPA ahead of tax filing.
Mandatory Portfolio Risk Disclosure
Investing in securities involves risk, including the potential loss of principal capital. Asset allocation and tax-efficient investing strategies do not guarantee a profit or protect against loss in declining markets. Fountain Wealth Partners does not provide legal or formal accounting services; all tax strategies should be coordinated with your personal CPA or tax professional.

Frequently asked questions about tax-efficient investing
Direct answers: Practical details on asset location mechanics, tax-loss harvesting rules, and CPA coordination.
How does tax-efficient investing in Alpharetta increase my total portfolio return?
Tax-efficient investing in Alpharetta increases your net return by minimizing tax friction. By placing income-heavy assets inside sheltered accounts, utilizing low-turnover index funds in taxable accounts, and continuously harvesting tax losses to offset realized capital gains, you allow a larger portion of your principal to remain invested and compound over time.
How does the 365-day continuous tax-loss harvesting process work?
Rather than waiting until December, we monitor your taxable accounts throughout the entire year. When market fluctuations create an unrealized loss in a specific tax lot, we sell that position to lock in the capital loss and immediately reinvest the proceeds into a similar, non-identical index fund or ETF. This ensures your portfolio remains 100% invested in the market while capturing a tax loss to offset taxable capital gains and up to $3,000 of ordinary income.
What is the difference between asset allocation and asset location?
Asset allocation refers to the overall percentage of stocks, bonds, and cash across your total balance sheet to achieve your target risk-return profile. Asset location is the strategic science of deciding which specific account type (taxable brokerage, Traditional IRA, or Roth IRA) holds each asset class to maximize overall after-tax efficiency.
Where are my taxable assets held and will moving accounts trigger taxes?
Your accounts are held in your own name at independent, SIPC-insured institutional custodians—specifically Charles Schwab & Co. and Fidelity Institutional. We initiate account transfers using the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS), transferring your securities in-kind directly from your current custodian without liquidating them to cash. After arrival, David Fountain, CFP® professional, reviews each individual lot to construct a gradual, tax-managed transition plan.
How do you coordinate with my CPA or tax accountant?
We work collaboratively with your CPA throughout the year. We supply detailed realized gain/loss schedules, cost-basis reports, and 1099 summaries directly to your tax preparer. Additionally, we coordinate on year-end capital gains budgets to ensure our portfolio actions support your broader income tax strategy.
